Toronto Shop Worker Cleaning Baskets With Spit

A grocery store worker decided to give grocery baskets the old spit-shine treatment.

A customer captured a cleaner at the FreshCo at Bathurst and Nassau Sts. on July 5 spitting on to a towel and then wiping down grocery baskets with it.
“I couldn’t believe that. I was in shock … I feel sick,” Marta Casimiro, who recorded the video and provided it to CityNews, told the media outlet.

Casimiro said she watched the cleaner then wipe down grocery carts with the same towel.

FreshCo, which is owned by Sobeys, said it is launching a complete internal investigation and is “taking this very seriously.”

“This is absolutely reprehensible behaviour and completely against the standards we work so hard to achieve in our stores each day,” said company spokesperson Natasha Compton.

“The health and safety of our customers and teammates is our top priority — that has never been more true than right now, through the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Compton confirmed the individual in the video is not an employee of FreshCo and works for a third-party service provider. He is no longer working in the store.
